The Yankees create surprise and eliminate Indians

CLEVELAND 0- Didi Gregorius banged two circuits against Corey Kluber and the New York Yankees eliminated the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday with a 5-2 win in the fifth and final game of the series.

The Yankees overcame a 2-0 deficit to win a place in the championship series.

Joe Girardi's troop has faced the elimination for the fourth time since the start of the playoffs and will compete against the Houston Astros in the American League championship series starting Friday at Minute Maid Park.

The Western American champions, led by second-base player Jose Altuve, are 5-2 against the Yankees this season.

After winning two home games, the New York team - with some offensive help from rookie star Aaron Judge - went to the Progressive Field to finish the Indians, who won 102 games in the regular season , including a historic sequence of 22 victories, and who were favorites to win the World Series after losing it in seven games at the hands of the Cubs last year.

The Indians narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the fifth inning at the expense of CC Sabathia before David Robertson threw two innings and two thirds without a point on the way to victory. Yankee stopper Aroldis Chapman, who faced the Indians in the World Series last year, got a rescue in two heats of work.

Chapman came to the mound with a three-point lead in ninth after Brett Gardner had managed to hit a single of a point after 12 throws against Cody Allen. Taking advantage of a right field throw error Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier scored the fifth point of the Yankees.

Gardner's batting was symbolic for the Yankees. They would not abdicate.

When Austin Jackson was retired on hold to put an end to the encounter, Yankee players rushed to the mound to celebrate with Chapman.

The Yankees became the 10th team to overcome a deficit of 2-0 to win a series at the best of five games. New Yorkers also achieved the feat in 2001, beating the Oakland Athletics.

Gregorius, who replaced Jeter at the short-cut after his retirement in the 2014 season, slammed a solo circuit in the first inning against Kluber and added a two-point slap in the third inning at the expense of " as Indians, who did not seem the shadow of himself in the playoffs.

With a World Series win last season, the Indians had only one goal in mind for 2017.

They were once again tilted after leading by two games of differences in the playoffs. Last year, the Cleveland team conceded a 3-1 lead in the series against the Cubs.

Everything had been put in place for the Indians: Kluber on the mound and field advantage in the fifth and final game.

The Yankees, however, had the upper hand, without much help from Judge, who was four-time batting, with an average of 0.050 in that series, including 16 take-outs.

The six-foot-seven rookie may have saved his own season in Game 3, however, when he rushed to the right-field wall to capture Francisco Lindor's two-run 1-0.

Kluber was one of the most consistent shooters of the Major during the whole season, earning 18 wins and leading the American League with a 2.25 points average. He is one of the favorites to get his hands on the Cy Young Trophy.

However, the month of October was cruel for the right-handed pitcher. In two starts, he allocated nine points, including four rounds, in six innings and one-third in work. This is certainly not the kind of performance the Indians expected from their pitcher.

Gregorius only knocked once in 13 occasions in this series before hitting two circuits in the first three innings of the encounter.

The 27-year-old gave the lead 3-0 to the Yankees by sending the ball into the bleachers in the right field. He set a franchise record, being the shortstop that hit the most circuits (25), one more than Jeter in 1999 when number two led the Yankees to a second consecutive World Series title.
